This one is all plastic, from the grips to the connection point with the cartridge.īeing all plastic, the handle is extremely light. Most refillable razors have some mix of metal and plastic, with rubberized grips. The first thing that jumped out to us is that the handle for this razor is completely plastic. It offers some unique aspects we hadn’t seen elsewhere. The design of the BIC Hybrid Comfort 3 is different from other razors we’ve tried. That’s a big plus because with this many razors you don’t want to have them rattling around loose in a drawer until you use them. Included in the cardboard and plastic pack (which can be recycled after opening) was the handle and a dozen razor cartridges.Ĭartridges came in groups of four, each in a plastic holder. Our razor, which was bought from Amazon, came in a retail packaging. Is there really a need for something in between? To see for ourselves, we bought a BIC Hybrid Comfort 3 and put it to the test. Disposables have their place, as do typical refillable razors. To be honest, it’s a strange niche to try to fill. Meanwhile, it’s an upgrade from typical disposable razors, including better grip, three blades, and a pivoting head. Once you are done with the cartridges, you can toss the entire handle and then get a new one. Technically it’s a disposable razor but instead of tossing the entire thing at once, you change out the razor head like a normal reusable razor. Somewhere in between those two points is the BIC Hybrid Comfort 3. They serve their purpose, but most people wouldn’t want to use them as an everyday razor. Of course, they are as basic as shaving gets and are designed for a single use and then to be tossed. These, you can get in packs of five for $1. On the other end of the spectrum are the extremely cheap disposables. It’s not unusual to pay $3-4 for a cartridge on some of the fancier razors that also have a lot of bells and whistles you might not want. Closeness: Shaving enthusiasts look for a “BBS” shave-“baby’s butt smooth.” Having changed a lot of diapers in his day, Dan can tell you that that’s a somewhat spurious attribute, but we looked for a close shave without cuts and irritation.Let’s face it.Some people will do better with five blades-but these more densely packed blades can clog more easily, and no matter how many blades are in the razor, it has to rinse well. But we’ve done enough testing to believe that you get a quicker, smoother shave from three-blade razors. Multiple blades: One blade is certainly enough to get the job done, and seven is definitely overkill.A razor handle should maneuver around the contours of your face without you having to twist and angle it too much, and we believe a heavier handle is better, since it offers more control. A handle that works: A handle should have a good grip-any razor that slipped when wet during our testing was instantly disqualified. And shavers should continue to feel comfortable after shaving, without redness, irritation, or ingrown hairs. Modern multi-blade razors rarely nick or cut, so any razor that consistently did was eliminated. If the razor has a lubricating strip, it shouldn’t turn into a slippery mess. Comfort during and after use: This means that the razor feels good on your face-it glides well, cutting without pulling or tugging.
